    Zen Meditation: Drop-In Group 2024

    Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Registration is not required. Please arrive a few minutes early to park and settle in.

The way of Zen is very simple: how one keeps one's mind, moment after moment after moment. It is not "tuning out" or creating a “blissed out” state. Instead Zen encourages us to "tune in" and realize the miracle of being alive right in this moment, whatever it holds.

Our weekly sessions are Zen practice stripped down to the basics. There is no chanting or ritual, just seated and walking meditation, followed by a short teaching sharing the wisdom of ancient and contemporary Zen Masters (including the Buddha himself).

All levels of experience, including none, are welcome, and instruction is enthusiastically offered to beginners. Meditation cushions and chairs are provided. (If you are new, please come a few minutes early so we can help you get set up).

    COST:

Sessions are offered in accordance with the Buddha’s practice of dana (generosity). Donations of any amount are received with gratitude and help support the teaching and our practice space at ArtWaves.

    INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Laura Bonyon Neal is an ordained Zen Buddhist priest, authorized  Zen teacher, and  Dharma heir of the late Most Venerable Wonji Dharma. Whether teaching, meditating, cooking, gardening, or drawing at ArtWaves, Laura holds Zen’s great question “What Is This?” at the forefront in order to keep her mind moment after moment after moment. And she really likes cats.

Color touches on nearly every aspect of life on earth. It is used to elicit the widest range of emotions and feelings by quickly influencing cellular activity or raising or lowering blood pressure or triggering wakefulness and sleep. Color plays a vital role in mating and reproduction for most life forms and a central role in symbolizing the aspirations of nation states, corporations, and even the humble neighborhood grade school. In the realm of the visual arts color has reigned supreme since the earliest cave paintings, and in the mundane material world, color is used universally to influence the buying decisions of everything from Ferraris to Fruit Loops.

A theory can be defined as a well substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment, and a mystery is defined as something that baffles our understanding and cannot be explained. Since color cannot be studied in isolation, the course will move between modern scientific color theory and the mysterious world of color interaction and application as well as an exploration of the fundamentals of two dimensional design. We will study historic and modern pigments and their uses and applications across a broad range of the visual arts and will devote substantial class time to the execution of color design problems. Class time will be divided into lecture, critique, studio exercises, and the explanation of assignments due for the following class critique.

This course is designed to challenge, encourage and enlighten all levels of artistic interest and experience from beginner to working professional.

    Stars Wars Day

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!

This will be a special workshop just for Star Wars Day! Cyanotype, also call sun-printing, is an early photographic process that produces blue and white prints. It is usually done in bright sunlight, but can also produce beautiful prints on cloudy days, and can be done indoors with a specialized UV light. You’ll have a chance to try both sunlight and artificial light.

There will be a lot of movement between indoor and outdoor workstations - if you have any mobility challenges please let us know so we can accommodate you.

While this workshop is an introduction to cyanotype, all levels of experience are welcome to come and experiment. All ages welcome, children under 14 must be with an adult.

Jennifer Booher’s cyanotype work plays with seasonal changes and the optical properties of light.  She has been a Resident Artist with Acadia National Park since 2015, and Artist-in-Residence with the Mount Desert Island Historical Society since 2018. Ms. Booher is the recipient of grants from the Maine Arts Commission, the Puffin Foundation and the Kindling Fund.

Join us for a "Sew Down" brought to you by Which Stitch, A Circle of Needles.

Meet fellow sewers to make reusable produce bags that will be given to local farms, markets and food pantries. Unwanted clothing and fabric has a detrimental effect on the environment and this is an easy way to upcycle and make a difference. These bags will replace plastic produce bags that are difficult and costly to recycle.

Participants will leave with your own produce bag as well as leaving some bags to be shared. Our hope is to host future gatherings (including kids and youth classes) where learning basic sewing skills will be stressed.  Making produce bags covers many beginning sewing skills.

Machines, sergers, patterns, notions and fabric will be available.

Please bring your own machine if you have one. Bring your own washed cotton or cotton blends from the "fabric stash" or use our washed donated fabrics.

We are looking forward to stitching together with a purpose.

This project is organized by Claire T Weinberg and Paige Collins. For additional details, Claire can be reached at dulseandrugosa@gmail.com and Paige at yellowfarmhouse@hotmail.com

Our friends from NextStep will be joining us in the studio on Thursday, May 16th. We will be creating artwork that calls attention to the fact that Abuse can happen to anyone, from any walk of life. We will discuss the impact that abuse has on a person, their loved ones, and their community, as well as dispelling some common myths about how it happens and who it happens to. This is a great opportunity for folks to come together and create art in a safe environment, for a wonderful cause. This course, suitable for all-levels, will invite students to learn about Naturalist Illustration, a discipline of capturing the artist’s perspective in their work, rather than strictly adhering to realism. Students will be encouraged to use their references with loose interpretation and add their own flare to their work.

We will examine important principles such as composition, light, movement, and texture in both our references and our pieces. Students will have access to a wide range of mediums, their end product will be a small-medium sized drawing, painting, or multimedia piece with some type of ocean-dwelling creature as its subject.

Students will also have access to photographs and books to use as reference material, including both examples of fish and other creatures to use as reference photos and examples of naturalist illustration work to reference.

    Introduction to Cyanotype

Cyanotype, also called sun-printing, is an early photographic process that produces blue and white prints. It is usually done in bright sunlight, but can also produce beautiful prints on cloudy days, and can be done indoors with a specialized UV light. You’ll have a chance to try both sunlight and artificial light.

We will use seasonal plants including meadow flowers, ferns, feathers, crystal dishes, lace, and 19th century illustrations to make spring and summer landscape notecards.

There will be a lot of movement between indoor and out door workstations - if you have any mobility challenges please let us know so we can accommodate you.

While this workshop is an introduction to cyanotype, all levels of experience are welcome to come and experiment.

    Meet the Artist:
