COMMUNITY CALLS FOR ART

MDI HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM MONTHLY DISPLAYS

10 Wayman Ln, Bar Harbor, ME 04609

Email your interest and your preferred month choices to exhibits@artwavesmdi.orgShow 10 small works or 2 or 3 larger ones, framed or with edges painted if on 1.5” gallery-wrap canvases. 3-D works and bas-relief must be hangable. You hang on existing cable system and post labels using blue painters tape behind label to stick it to the wall. (Labels usually have your name, title , medium, unframed size if desired, price or NFS, and your contact info if for sale. QR codes are helpful.) Post your own bio if you want, again using blue painters tape behind it, or if framed using one of the existing hooks. Extra cables and hooks are behind the television. No room for rack cards or business cards unless the holder will hang on a hook in place of a painting. 2 wall spaces above the waiting room chairs: one approximately 40 tall by 84 wide with 3 cables, two hooks to a cable, can accommodate 6 smallish paintings or 1 or 2 larger. The other wall is approximately 30 tall x 80 wide, has two cables with one hook each. Adjust hook positions with a 1/8-inch hex driver which is in envelope stuck to the back of the Art by ArtWaves sign. Bring a small step stool and a level. Small frame bumpers on back corners could help keep paintings in place. You hang your work at MDI Hospital without their assistance, no need to check in with anyone. CALL FOR MEMBER ARTISTS

7 ARTISTS, 7 WALLS, AT CHOCO-LATTE CAFE'

OCTOBER 1 -- DECEMBER 31, 2024

240 MAIN STREET, BAR HARBOR, MAINE  04609

This Call for Art is open to ArtWaves Member Artists only, those members who joined at the $120.00 level of membership and are listed on our Member Artists pages. Choco-Latte is making 6 wall sections available to 7 of our Member Artists. Important: Please visit the following link for photos of the various wall spaces and the hooks to be used: Choco-Latte Wall Space. Each wall is space for a single artist, except for the 15' wall on the upper level, which will be shared by two people. The actual display space for art on each wall is a few inches less than the width of the wall, and should be hung so that people seated at tables cannot lean their head on the art. Walls will be randomly assigned to each displaying artist. You may display as much art as you would like, to fill your wall space. Your work will be for sale and sales will be managed by Choco-Latte. 20% of all sales will be donated to ArtWaves. Shipping if necessary will be the responsibility of the artist, and will be charged separately by the artists per private arrangement with the purchaser.

By your submission, you are granting ArtWaves and Choco-Latte permission to use images of your artwork for exhibit publicity and educational purposes. You are releasing and discharging the officers and members of ArtWaves and the owner and employees of Choco-Latte from any and all claims occasioned by damage to or loss of your artwork while in possession of ArtWaves or Choco-Latte.

Following are the submission guidelines, due by September 10, 2024.

All work must be one-of-a-kind, created by your hand, from your original concept and not a copy of someone else's photo or artwork. Excluded are AI (artificial intelligence) works, reproductions, and digital art/photography unless a one-of-a-kind single print with proof destroyed, on your honor. The venue does not have secure display for jewelry or fine crafts. Artists are expected to hang their own work. Works are expected to be professionally presented, framed or with finished edges, wired for hanging and ready for the purchaser's home "as is".

Choose three of the artworks you propose to include in your display. Photograph them and transfer them to your computer either by air-drop or by emailing them to yourself. Please name your image files with your last name and the title of your artwork, i.e., Wyeth - Christinas World. Send those good, full-size photos of 3 of the sample artworks to exhibits@artwavesmdi.org.   In your email, please provide the following information for each work:

Your name

Title

Medium and size of artwork (not including frame)

Price

Also in your submission email, please provide your phone number and best email address if we have any questions. Please tell us approximately how many works you would like to display. Artists will be chosen to exhibit by a competent and experienced curator, but in all cases, the venue has the final say if any art is deemed inappropriate for their space.

On September 15 you will be notified if your artwork has been chosen for this exhibit and you will receive further instructions. If selected, you will install your wall on October 1, 2024,  between the hours of 1 pm and 8 pm. De-installation will be on December 30, 2024, between the hours of 1 pm and 8 pm. You will bring your own hammer and picture hooks. (See  Choco-Latte Wall Space for photo of picture hooks you need to get.) If you are not available on the installation and de-installation dates, you will need to find someone who will do it for you. Regrettably we don't have adequate staffing to handle submitted artworks that require shipping. Artwork must be hand-delivered and installed and picked up by someone local.

Thank you for your participation.

Image by Liz Cutler, oils on canvas, for 10x1◼️ $110

All art for this exhibit will be 10” x 10” and will be priced at $110. Sales will run through Reel Pizza and 20% commission will be retained.

Important Dates

Deliver your one or two works to ArtWaves on the morning of Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

There will be a reception and preview party at ArtWaves on Thursday, June 27, 2024, 5:30-7:30 PM.

ArtWaves will transport the work to Reel Pizza to be displayed July 1-July 15, and will return it to ArtWaves for you to pick up on July 16.

Instructions

Make your art on 10” x 10” canvases or cradled panels with a minimum depth of 1⅜”. If art is bas-relief, it may not protrude more than 1” forward from the support. If your artwork is on paper adhered to the panel, spray it with an appropriate art varnish to protect it. We recommend matte or satin finish, not glossy. Media must be dry.

If framed, outside edges of frame must be approx.10x10, which will require that the artwork be smaller. (It is preferable that you paint on canvases or cradled panels with a minimum depth of 1⅜”, but framed works will be accepted.)  10x10 ◼️ $110 unframed works should have the edges painted or treated.

Please mount your D-rings on the back, 2” below the uppermost edge, and attach braided picture wire tautly between the two D-rings.  See sketch.

Please put a clearly printed tag on the back of your artwork: Artwork title, your name, the medium, and your email address, all easily readable.

By your submission, you are granting Artwaves and Reel Pizza permission to use images of your artwork for publicity and educational purposes. Your art will be handled by knowledgeable professionals experienced in the handling of artwork. Nevertheless, by your submission you are releasing and discharging the officers and members of Artwaves and the exhibit venue from any and all claims occasioned by damage to or loss of your artwork while in the possession of Artwaves or the venue.

Each member may submit 1 or 2 works. We plan to display at least one piece from each submitting artist. The decisions of the show coordinators shall be final. The library will handle sales and will take a 20% commission. By your submission, you are granting Artwaves and Northeast Harbor Library permission to use images of your artwork for publicity and educational purposes.

All work must be created by you as the artist, from your original concept, and must be one-of-a-kind unless ceramics in which case a set may be displayed as one artwork. AI (artificial intelligence) works are excluded as not your original work. We suggest that works be limited to no more than 48x48 including the frame and no more than 15-lb in weight – let us know if your work exceeds this.

Three-dimensional pottery, sculpture, and assemblages will be displayed on the open countertops. There may be space on shelves in the library proper, but the Mellon room is heavily used, so no free-standing works in the exhibit room. You may provide a tasteful base-cloth or very short pedestal for any 3D works which you prefer displayed on the countertops.

Fabric and fiber works including quilts and wall-hangings need to be made hangable. Folded silks may be securely draped over a clothes-hanger or mechanism of your choosing, which will then be hung on the wall using the cable system. Weavings and fabric on a rod need a cord attached allowing the rod to be hung on one or two cables. Please let us know if the work will exceed the recommended maximum width of 48” so that we can accommodate. Please advise us on how best to hang your work, especially if a three-dimensional hanging.

Paintings, drawings, prints, and other two-dimensional flatwork must be wired for hanging on the library’s existing cable system; sawtooth hangers will not work. If framed, we suggest the hanging wire be taut and attached with D-rings mounted on the back of the sides, ¼ of the height from the top edge. Paintings must be dry. Artwork must be framed, except museum-depth cradled panels and gallery-wrapped canvas at least 1⅜ inch thick may be unframed if the edges are painted. Staples may not be exposed. Glassworks need a loop at the top by which they can be tied to the cable hook. Please let us know if you will need a window for the display of stained glass, otherwise it will be displayed on the neutral, light-value wall.

Jewelry cannot be securely displayed. If you create one-of-a-kind fine-art-jewelry, you may submit a single framed photo of each piece (1 or 2 pieces) if the photo clearly shows your technique and creativity. We are uncertain whether this will be adequate, so these photos will be displayed at the show coordinators’ discretion. Your photo(s) need to be framed and wired per “Paintings” instructions above.

Email your submissions to exhibits@artwavesmdi.org by Saturday night, March 16, 2024. You may submit 1 or 2 works. Please send an image of each artwork you are submitting to exhibits@artwavesmdi.org. If possible, name your image file with your last name and the title of your artwork, i.e., Wyeth - Christinas World. Please provide the following information for the tag for each work:

Your name

Artwork Title

Medium

Price if for sale, NFS if not for sale

Your email address or phone number

Also print your email after sending, cut out the tag information, and securely attach the tag information to the each submitted work. Delivery will be to NEH Library, the Mellon Room, 4/1/24, 10am to noon.
