Our History
In 2012, local artist Liz Cutler and her studio mate Katie Churchill embarked on a creative journey that would transform their studio into a hub of artistic expression. With the inclusion of figure drawing classes and collaborative efforts with talented artists like Rob Pollen, Phil Frey, Colin Page, and Mary Ternus, the seeds of ArtWaves MDI were sown. This artistic endeavor blossomed further when a partnership with the YWCA introduced stained glass mosaic and printmaking to their repertoire. ArtWaves moved to Main Street in 2014 which included a small gallery. As the offerings expanded and artistic connections deepened, it became evident that Mount Desert Island was yearning for a Community Arts Center. It was clear in 2017 when Kippy Stroud's Town Hill art campus with 3 studios and a dance studio became available, ArtWaves found a home.
ArtWaves continues to inspire the community through classes and workshops held at ArtWaves and around the MDI area.
