This 6 week course with Ernie McMullen is designed for for a broad range of artistic interests and abilities from beginner to accomplished practitioner to those who want to re-invigorate their interest. Through the medium of pen and ink, we will explore the basic visual elements and principals that are foundational to a comprehensive arts education. Design competence is essential for success in every activity in the visual arts.
It doesn’t matter if your interest is in painting, drawing, graphic design, fashion design, fiber arts, or anything in between, they are all rooted in basic design.
The first half of the class will be devoted to the presentation and exploration of the visual elements and principals including:
Elements: Line, texture, value, shape, form and space.
Principals: Balance, contrast, perspective, rhythm/movement, proportion/scale, unity/variety and pattern.
Homework assignments will be related to class lectures on the elements and principals.
The second half of the class will focus on a pen and ink still-life drawing done over several weeks both in and out of class as well as individual and group critiques.
The goal of the 6 week class is to develop a critical working knowledge of basic design while simultaneously developing competence with pen and ink and wash drawing. Focusing on ink and wash for the whole course will allow for an in depth and disciplined exploration of the assigned problems. Strong emphasis will be placed on analyzing, simplifying and solving what appear on the surface to be impossible problems with the aim of developing artistic independence and autonomy.
Class meets every Saturday morning from 9 to 12 from October 5 to November 9th.
Special price member discount $120. Non members $200. There will be a materials fee of $60
