Mud Season Magic: Techniques for Multimedia Illustration

  • 20 Apr 2024
  • 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM
  • Kaleidoscope Studio

Rekindle the joy you felt making art as a child and learn to PLAY again! Mud season has valuable lessons to teach us about the merit of mess, and the opportunities it affords us for growth.

This all-levels class will cover techniques for combining media such as ink, watercolor, gouache, pencil, and oil pastel for vibrantly layered compositions with rich textures and depth. Students will put color theory principles into practice by learning approaches for inverting and mixing colors in their composition, and explore innovative approaches to mark-making.

The class will be structured to maximize student's time making, with an emphasis on process over the end product. We'll begin with a discussion of different techniques used by multimedia illustrators such as Eric Carle and Faith Ringgold, and talk about how aversion to making mistakes holds us back in our artistic process. Then we'll dive in with a series of explorative exercises to conquer what scares us. In the second half of the class, we'll begin longer studies, and hold group critiques to generate ideas for creatively 'resolving' our compositions.
