In this hands-on creative art class, we will learn how to twine to make cordage using a technique that goes back at least 50,000 years, predating pottery. Using your own recycled fibers, we will practice techniques used by indigenous cultures worldwide that are still used today to create vessels, baskets, string, rope, bags, fishing nets, sculptures, textiles and many other items. The class goal will be to create your own unique twined vessel.
Warning: The art of twining is a slow and fun practice that you can take anywhere with you; but the repetition of the movement of hand and fiber is meditative and very addictive! Join us in this fun ancient practice. No prior knowledge in twining is expected! 14-Adult
2 day workshop/ 2 hour class/ over 2 weeks
Your Instructor Bonnie Chase
A mixed media artist living on a small farm on MDI, where I create, grow, collect and forage for most of my supporting tools, dyes, inks and paints used in my studio: Feather Leaf Stone.my Art is inspired by the seasons, nature and the diverse landscape on this beautiful island. Local plants, earth pigments, plant fibers and found objects become my substance for inspiration and get incorporated into my works. Much of my work is tactile and my hope is that it reflects the many transient cycles of the seasons on MDI and brings a sense of place and joy to its viewers.
