Silverpoint is a surprisingly simple technique with ancient origins that will bring your drawings to the next level. It has been known through the centuries for its capability to create fine detail with a subtle shimmer all its own. In this class we will cover the basics, including preparing the ground, different mark making techniques and learning to maximize the subtle qualities of the material. If desired, we will also explore applying silverpoint drawings to three-dimensional objects. Each student will leave the class with two works in progress and the knowledge and materials to continue to explore silverpoint media on their own.

 About the instructor:

Phoebe Zildjian is a metalsmith and sculptor living and working in coastal Maine. She builds architectural miniatures and fine craft works that create a sense of place in the natural world. Her work illustrates the principle that seeking solitude is a feminist act. In her quest to imply a vast, unseen landscape, delicate material depict the impact of the elements upon these spaces. Through the relationship of material and structure, Zildjian’s work provides a focal point for solitude and contemplation of an endless reality beyond view. She holds a BFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry from Maine College of Art, and has studied craft at institutions including Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Monson Arts.
