Introduction to Mosaic Art Making

This class is geared toward beginners or artists with some experience who want to learn more about basic techniques, tools and materials involved in creating 2-dimensional mosaic art. This class covers types of tesserae (a small block of stone, tile, glass or other materials used in the construction of a mosaic), cutting, proper adhesives, substrates, design/layout and grouting. You will learn how to safely cut and break materials with mosaic tools to use for your mosaic. We will discuss andamento—the flow of mosaics and learn different ways to lay tesserae in direct technique with a PVA glue and/or thinset. All materials, supplies and use of tools are provided. Students are encouraged to experiment and begin to discover the possibilities of mosaics. No experience necessary.
