    Zen Meditation: Drop-In Group 2023

    Wednesdays from 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Registration is not required. Please arrive a few minutes early to park and settle in.

The way of Zen is very simple: how one keeps one's mind, moment after moment after moment. It is not "tuning out" or creating a “blissed out” state. Instead Zen encourages us to "tune in" and realize the miracle of being alive right in this moment, whatever it holds.

Our weekly sessions are Zen practice stripped down to the basics. There is no chanting or ritual, just seated and walking meditation, followed by a short teaching sharing the wisdom of ancient and contemporary Zen Masters (including the Buddha himself).

All levels of experience, including none, are welcome, and instruction is enthusiastically offered to beginners. Meditation cushions and chairs are provided. (If you are new, please come a few minutes early so we can help you get set up).

    COST:

Sessions are offered in accordance with the Buddha’s practice of dana (generosity). Donations of any amount are received with gratitude and help support the teaching and our practice space at ArtWaves.

    INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Laura Bonyon Neal is an ordained Zen Buddhist priest, authorized  Zen teacher, and  Dharma heir of the late Most Venerable Wonji Dharma. Whether teaching, meditating, cooking, gardening, or drawing at ArtWaves, Laura holds Zen’s great question “What Is This?” at the forefront in order to keep her mind moment after moment after moment. And she really likes cats.

This class is designed for adults and adolescents who are unfamiliar with iMovie. You will learn how to start a project, import clips and photos to the timeline, trim clips, adjust audio, add a VoiceOver, add titles, and export the finished movie.

Participants need to bring a fully charged iPhone along with the iMovie app which is available for free from the app store. You will need to film six to twenty five short horizontal videos (clips) that you can use to construct a short 30-120 second video. Most of the clips I shoot for my videos are 15 seconds or less, Nothing should be shorter than 5 seconds. Most clips in my timelines are trimmed to between 1 and 5 seconds.

Think of a theme, and then illustrate it with your clips using a variety of angles. Include some photos, and be sure to shoot with your phone in the horizontal position.

    Instructor Bio:

Galen Lowe, a retired video teacher from MDIHS, suggests documenting a walk, a family gathering, or your dog a play. Keep a general storyline in mind, and try to end with something interesting. You may already have clips on your phone to use - just remember, we are making short videos, and the output will be horizontal.

Beginning with the proposition that we are already inherently connected, we will use improvisational movement structures to deepen our understanding of how this connection can affect and be affected by our bodies––how we interact and inform, share and navigate space, create ecologies of movement.

I am a white nonbinary transdisciplinary artist and teacher from unceded Peskotomuhkate (“Passamaquoddy”) and Panewapskek
(“Penobscot”) land. my current research engages self as nexus and gravity as consciousness––how we can cultivate a movement
practice that is gentle, sustainable, kind, and ecologically informed? how does movement and our experience thereof change when
we appreciate our fundamental nature as congealed expressions of gravity and energy? pulling from linguistics, cognitive science,
chemistry, holistic herbalism, metaphysics, and various movement techniques, i aim to demonstrate and illuminate connectivity, and
move towards a verbal way of living, rather than a nominal one. i am grateful to have learned from such considerate movers as
Ishmael Houston-Jones, Miguel Gutierrez, Susan Sgorbati, Kieth Hennessey, Tommy DeFrantz, Deborah Black, Kathleen
Hermesdorf, Cassils, and many others. my practice is heavily informed by my chronic illness, queerness, and neurodivergence, and
is deeply rooted in healing through anti-colonialism and reindigenisation.

Here's your time to learn the art of pysanky, Ukrainian egg decorating.

    All Ages Welcome!

At ArtWaves Kaleidoscope studio, the table is set with candles, beeswax, local eggs, kistkas, vibrantly colored dyes and we all step by step instructions.

I began this with my children and their friends decades ago and the tradition continues. We will be using the same tools and methods that have been used for hundreds of years.

Gather with family or friends to batik - dipping in dyes and applying warm wax over the areas you want to keep, to make colorful elaborate designs.

Try out the electric version of a kistka, or combine techniques. Follow traditional patterns, or create your own designs!

Fun for both kids and adults, although younger kids will need adult supervision.
